Onslaught rules

Objective and turns

Destroy the enemy General or force a surrender to win.

Both teams use the same army mix. Each side rolls a d6 for initiative; ties are rerolled. The winner acts first and chooses who places terrain and deploys first.

Skirmish gives two activations per turn; Battle gives three. A unit may activate once each turn.

Against the computer, two full rounds without combat make the Amateur General push its army towards yours.

Movement and sight

Move straight or diagonally up to the unit’s movement value.

You may pass through an allied square. Only one unit may finish in a square.

Allied units and blocking terrain prevent ranged fire through them.

Combat

Roll the unit’s dice. Each 5 or 6 is a hit and removes one rank. A unit is destroyed when all ranks are gone.

Ranged: the attacker needs ammunition, a clear shot, and a target in range. A defender in range with ammunition may return fire or retreat to an adjacent empty square.

Melee: charge a target within movement range. The defender may fight back or retreat; the exchange winner takes the square.

Exchanges continue until a unit retreats or is destroyed. A unit with no empty retreat square must fight if able.

Units

Lineman: move 2; 4 ranks; 1 melee and 1 ranged die per rank; range 2. Mobile.

Cavalry: move 3; 3 ranks; 2 melee and 1 ranged die per rank; range 1. Mobile.

Artillery: move 1; 1 rank; 1 melee or 4 ranged dice per rank; range 3. The 4 ranged dice apply only to its opening attack.

General: move 3; 3 ranks; 2 melee and 2 ranged dice per rank; range 1. Mobile.

Mobile: move and fire in one activation by spending one square of movement to fire.

Terrain

Breastworks: ranged attacks against a unit on it hit on 6.

Ridge: blocks movement except from its rear edge, which faces the placing team’s deployment zone. Units enter and leave through that edge only. It gives ranged cover, blocks shots through it, and adds one to firing range. A target on it counts as at least two squares away.

Forest: removes one incoming ranged attack die, to a minimum of one.

Uneven ground: limits Cavalry crossing it to two squares of movement or charge.

Farm house (Battle): covers two vertical squares and blocks movement and ranged sight.

Stone wall (Battle): covers two horizontal squares. A unit on it receives Breastworks cover.

Skirmish setup

Army: 6–10 units per side, including one General. Both sides use your chosen mix.

Board: 8 × 12. White deploys in rows 1–3; black in rows 10–12.

Terrain: three pieces per side from Breastworks, Ridge, Forest, and Uneven ground. Place them in rows 4–9.

Turn: two activations per side, against the Amateur General or another player on this device.

Linemen hold a ranged line, Cavalry charge quickly, and Artillery fires from farther away. Protect your General.

Battle setup

Army: 15–20 units per side, including one General. Both sides use your chosen mix.

Board: 8 × 16. White deploys in rows 1–4; black in rows 13–16.

Terrain: five pieces per side in rows 5–12. Choose the Skirmish pieces, Farm house, or Stone wall.

Ammunition: Lineman 8, Cavalry 6, Artillery 6, General 8.

Turn: three activations per side, against the Amateur General or another player on this device.

Use the same unit roles as Skirmish to build your larger army.
